REMINDERS: 

• Attendance is compulsory for all students from 9 am to 4 pm
• Attendance will be taken in Campus View at 9 am
• As the event focuses on Environment and Sustainability, students are requested to come in shades of green
• Food Festival participants report to Maya Ma'am or Suparna Ma'am by 11 am on August 22, 2014
• Food to fit into any of the 6 regions of India, North, South, East, West, Central and North East
• Tables will be put up in Gourmet
• Coordinate with Mr Ganapathy
• No cooking/warming of food allowed
• Profits to go to charity

	PARTICIPATION POINTS: 100 points for participation for each class. This will be calculated on the basis of percentage of participation
Debate	One participant per class (minimum)
1st place: 30 points	Style of debating will be based on sociologists allotted to the participants two days prior to the event (Wednesday 20th)
2nd Place: 30 points	Mode of debating will be in the form of a group discussion with each participant getting a turn to speak, rebut and diverge to a new sub topic.
	The topic will be provided on the spot by the judges along with the speaker time and duration of topic, and criteria for grading. The judges will also moderate and chair the debate.
	The topic will be based around the theme of the fest that is "Environment, Sustainability & Development”.
	An emergency or crisis can be introduced by the judges to remove stagnancy in the topics provided and test participant ingenuity and creativity. The solution or comments on the crisis has to be incorporated into the discussion from then on.
	Professional integrity and courtesy must be maintained by all participants.
	Placards and seating arrangements will be provided on the basis of sociologists given.
	Notebooks and stationery are allowed for writing down key points.
	Rules are subject to change by the judges.

SAMBANDH Program Details

SAMBANDH 2014

This festival organized by the students of the Department of Sociology will be held on Friday, August 22, 2014. The events will be held in the Central Block and the Food Fiesta will take place in Gourmet.

The events will cover Art, Literary and Stage events and students from PSEco, PSEng and EPS will compete for the grand class prize. Each class will get points for participation and these points as well as those from the winners will add towards deciding the overall winning class.

10 Minutes on Stage will be 10 minutes given to each class to showcase their skills on the broad theme of Environment, Development and Sustainability. The students can come up with a combination of music, dance and theater. 

The Food Fiesta will be held in the Gourmet with six clusters of stalls corresponding to the six regions of India, the North, South, East, West, Center and the North East. Food from these regions will star in each cluster and students will be selling them with their profits helping charities across the city.

National Young Sociologist Competition 2014-15

 Details

The Department of Sociology, Christ University, Bangalore, organises an annual National Young Sociologist Competition for undergraduate students having Sociology as one of their subject. It aims to encourage the young generation to carry out small research projects on socially relevant subjects and issues to enhance their critical and analytical thinking. The Competition seeks to fulfill this aim by inviting the participants to write original papers on topics prescribed below to participate in the paper presentation competition which will be held on 12 December 2014.

Theme and Topics

The theme for the National Young Sociologist Competition 2014-15 is

Environment, Sustainability and Development

Social progress or development was the main agenda of societies for many decades in the past. Development was defined in terms of economic output or material progress and the ‘cost’ of development was never considered significant. Though we achieved longer life, higher income and more leisure time, it was accompanied by many adverse effects generated due to reckless developmental projects. The question of environmental degradation and sustainability were added later as significant dimensions of development.

Nowadays, progress and growth are inseparable from sustainable development and the balance between economic performance, well-being of people and the protection of environment is inevitable. Climate change, other environmental issues and the economic recession are increasingly affecting many people and the future of the planet. Therefore, the integration of sustainable development in all policies is even more important to tackle these problems. Not only is the concept of sustainable development a collective expression, it also implies a strong commitment and a new way of thinking, debating, deciding and acting

The competition is open to all undergraduate students studying Sociology as one their subjects in any of the institutions in India.

Submission Guidelines

1.      As a first step to participate in this competition all participants need to send a 300 word abstract of their paper by August 23, 2014 to:

2.  The abstracts should be accompanied by the contact details of participants including name, college/institution details, postal address, email address, and phone number.

3.      Participants need to enclose a bonafide certificate from the Head of their Institution and a copy of their college/university identity card along with the abstract.

4.      There is no limit to the number of entries from a single institution.

5.      All entries should be original works of the participant with appropriate references. Plagiarized entries will be disqualified.

6.      Co-authored papers will not be considered.

7.      Submitted abstracts will be screened and the authors of shortlisted abstracts will be notified by September 1, 2014.

8.      Authors of shortlisted abstracts have to submit two hard copies and the soft copy in of their full-length paper in word format to either of the above-mentioned addresses by October 15, 2014.

9.      Participants whose papers have been selected for the final presentation at Christ University, Bangalore on December 12, 2014 will be notified by November 1, 2014.

10.  Travel will be reimbursed (second class sleeper) for outstation paper presenters.

11.  Accommodation will be provided for outstation paper presenters.

Evaluation Process and Rewards

1        The entries will be evaluated by an eminent panel of judges and the authors of the ten best entries will be invited to Christ University to make a presentation and to defend their ideas in the presence of students of Humanities and Social Sciences.

2        Awards are given to the prize winners. The first prize carries Rs 10,000/-, the second Rs 7,000/-, and the third Rs 5,000/-. The conveyance expenditure of the finalists would be reimbursed as per Christ University guidelines and the finalists would receive hospitality from Christ University community.
